The findings, said Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou, would “rock the foundation” of Christianity and Judaism.

Ancient Israelites worshipped many gods, rather than one, meaning the origins of Christianity and Judaism are polytheistic, and that monotheism is a recent development.

Ancient Israelites also believed God had a wife, or “consort”: a goddess named Asherah.
